Bleeding Gums (Scurvy) 🦷🩸

Don’t eat only garri or noodles every time. Eat green leaves you can cook into food too.

symptoms

  • Gums will swell or bleed when brushing or eating.
  • The body will feel weak.
  • Wounds will take longer to heal than normal.
  • The person will feel tired or dull most of the time.
  • Small red spots may appear on the skin — like blood under the skin, because the blood is leaking slowly underneath.
  • There will be body and muscle pain, especially in the arms and legs.
  • Hair on the head may start to fall off.
  • The person may lose weight and look thinner than before.

causes

  • It happens when a person does not eat fruits or foods that contain vitamin C.
  • Vitamin C is a nutrient in some foods and fruits that helps the body to remain strong enough to fight off diseases. It is not good for a person to lack this nutrient because it protects the body.
  • People who are sick and don’t eat well for a long time may get it.
  • People who drink a lot of alcohol or smoke too much.
  • It can happen if someone only eats garri, rice, or dry foods without fresh fruits or vegetables.

effects

  • It can spoil the gums and teeth.
  • The body won’t be able to fight off infections properly.
  • The person may fall sick often.
  • It can make the bones weak — especially in children. The skin may look dry or break easily like cracked sand.
  • Wounds will be stubborn and slow to heal — they take a much longer time than usual.
  • Children may not grow well.

prevention

lifestyle

  • Eat fresh fruits like oranges, guavas, pawpaw (papaya), and mangoes regularly.
  • Don’t overcook vegetables — just steam or boil lightly so the vitamin C doesn’t wash away into the water.
  • Add ugu (fluted pumpkin), waterleaf, or bitterleaf into your soup and eat it.
  • Eat salads or fresh pepper if your stomach doesn’t have issues.
  • Rest well and eat food regularly — don’t starve yourself.

comment

  • Don’t eat only garri or noodles every time. Eat green leaves you can cook into food too.
  • If your gums are bleeding or you’re always tired, check what you’ve been eating.
  • Don’t say you won’t eat because you want to be slim. It’s only a healthy person that can enjoy life.
  • You can eat well and still do small exercise if you want to slim down. It works even if it takes time — just don’t starve yourself.
  • Oranges or lemons can feel too sour and painful, especially if your gums are hurting, so:
  • -Squeeze the orange or lemon into water — make juice out of it.
  • -Use a straw to drink it so it does not touch your gums too much.
  • -Mix it with warm water or honey to reduce the sourness.
  • -You can also eat ripe pawpaw, mango, watermelon, or soft tomato — they have vitamin C too but are not as sour as oranges.
